Following a successful beta testing session, Apple rolled out an updated MobileMe for its customers last week. In the meanwhile, the Mac maker has updated the section dedicated to MobileMe on its website, in order to better reflect the changes it has made with the cloud-based service.

The new MobileMe Mail at me.com is now out of beta and available to all members, Apple announced last week. The cloud-based service now features widescreen and compact views, rules to keep email organized everywhere, single-click archiving, a formatting toolbar, increased security with SSL, support for external email addresses, improved junk mail filtering, and overall improved performance.

However, Me.com gives customers a full suite of ad-free web applications. Besides mail, subscribers also get Contacts, Calendar, Gallery, iDisk, and the Find My iPhone feature. All these are accessible from a web browser on any Mac or PC, according to the Mac maker.

“Check your email, add new contacts to your address book, manage your calendar, create an album of your vacation photos, and access and share those big presentation slides. Even locate your lost iPhone or iPad. Just sign in at www.me.com from any computer,” Apple explains. Numerous other details are given on the new me.com.

Apple felt it was necessary to also release a dedicated iOS application to serve customers whose iPhone, or iPad might get lost. As such, Apple has recently rolled out the Find My iPhone application - now available for free from the iTunes App Store.

“If you lose your iPhone or iPad, MobileMe can help you find it with Find My iPhone. Just enable Find My iPhone in the MobileMe settings on your iPhone or iPad. Then sign in to me.com from any computer or using the Find My iPhone app on another iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to display its approximate location on a full-screen map,” Apple explains on the updated MobileMe page.

Weighing in on the new Find My iPhone app, the Cupertino-based Mac maker adds, “Because the unexpected happens in the most unexpected places, the Find My iPhone app can help you locate your missing iPhone or iPad even when you don’t have access to a computer. It’s free on the App Store and available to anyone. So if you misplace your device, download the Find My iPhone app on a friend’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and sign in to your MobileMe account to access all the Find My iPhone features on the spot.” To protect their stolen information, users can employ this service to lock the missing device, or even remotely wipe it to permanently delete all data.
