Memory prices already shooting up by 10%, major memory suppliers stop shipments

A huge chemical explosion at a Hynix FAB complex in South Korea just took out 15% of the world’s memory production, causing immediate price jumps for memory modules.

Your favorite NVIDIA graphics card is now 10% more expensive than it was about an hour ago, and it might be even more expensive tomorrow, as Hynix is responsible for supplying 30% of the world’s DRAM production.

KitGuru has contacted several major memory suppliers and has been told that “Everything is on hold.” The site’s sources in the Far East reportedly said that “major memory brands have stopped shipping anything at all, until they know the full extent of the damage and how the markets will react.”

Needless to point out, with Apple also drawing much of its DRAM from Hynix, MacBook prices might increase soon by a small margin. Unless, of course, Apple feels generous and decides to foot the bill.
