Apple has reportedly confirmed the purchase of search company Chomp for an undisclosed sum of money today.

Chomp is a San Francisco-based developer that created a search engine for mobile apps based on what these apps do: “Chomp’s proprietary algorithm learns the functions and topics of apps, so you can search based on what apps do, not just what they’re called,” explains the company.

Examples include searches like “puzzle games,” “kids games,” “expense trackers,” “tip calculators” or “chat.” The iPhone app is currently still available on the iTunes App Store.

"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans," an Apple spokesman said today, confirming the purchase.
