The Apple board of directors and Chief Executive Officer, Timothy D. Cook, have issued official statements acknowledging the death of their company’s beloved co-founder.

Although Apple’s web site had been rigged to advertise a newly announced iPhone, new iPod models, iOS 5, and iCloud, the company today is featuring an obituary consisting of a black and white photo of Steve Jobs and the time period has been among the living.

Jobs, one of the greatest minds of our time, lives on in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

“We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” wrote Apple’s board of directors.

“Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.”

Along those lines, the world is immeasurably emptier without him. Mostly for those closest to him:

“His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts,” the board adds.

Tim Cook personally issued a statement to the team at Apple acknowledging the death of Jobs. His message is also posted as the official Apple obituary.

In his email to employees, Cook revealed that Apple is planning “a celebration of Steve’s extraordinary life for Apple employees that will take place soon.”

Those who wish to share any thoughts (condolences) in the meanwhile can use [email protected] to leave a few words.

However, as Cook himself notes, “No words can adequately express our sadness at Steve’s death or our gratitude for the opportunity to work with him. We will honor his memory by dedicating ourselves to continuing the work he loved so much.”
