Development on OS X Mavericks is almost over, launch due this month

With iOS 7 deployed and OS X Mavericks almost out the door, Apple has already shifted development resources over to the next-generation iOS and Mac OS.

Sources familiar with Apple’s internal activity are telling 9to5mac that “Apple is said to already have diverted the majority of its OS X and iOS resources to development of the next two Apple operating systems: OS X 10.10 and iOS 8.”

Code-named “Syrah,” OS X 10.10 has a new design that borrows graphics from iOS 7, Apple’s completely-flat new mobile operating system currently installed on hundreds of millions of iPhones and iPads worldwide.

These sources merely “hinted” that “Apple has been toying with a new design across the system that is akin, but not as dramatically different, to the new designs found in iOS 7 and iCloud.com.”

As far as iOS 8 is concerned, “development of that OS is making headway, and it will likely bring feature enhancements to Maps,” according to the report.

Neither OS X 10.10 nor iOS 8 will be arriving any time soon, but it’s always good to know what Apple is up to.

Editor’s note While the report doesn’t mention anything except the improved Maps for iOS 8, you can bet it will include dozens more new features.

Keep in mind that Apple will increment the numerology of its iPhone line next year, so we should expect some radically new features taking advantage of whatever new hardware Apple puts inside the iPhone 6.

As for OS X 10.10, I feel it's high time Apple dropped this numbering scheme. Although OS XI doesn’t sound much more attractive, I wouldn’t mind seeing a change in this department too.

In the meantime, mark the last ten days of October on your calendars.
