The FBI has refuted AntiSec’s claims that it had tracked 12 million iOS UDIDs (unique device identifiers), following the leak of one million such device IDs into the wild. Apple has now done the same, adding that iOS 6 will no longer use this type of device identification.

In a statement offered to All Things D, Apple spokesperson Natalie Kerris said, “The FBI has not requested this information from Apple, nor have we provided it to the FBI or any organization.”

Kerris went on to say that, “Additionally, with iOS 6 we introduced a new set of APIs meant to replace the use of the UDID and will soon be banning the use of UDID.”

It is unclear whether the UDID leak reported earlier this week is the main reason why Apple is switching away from this type of device identification. The company will have to use a different method to designate individual devices, and cybercriminals are likely to hack those too at some point in time.
