Apple has moved its countdown timer from the iTunes page over to the main page of its website where everyone can see that the App Store is days away from reaching the 25 billion downloads milestone.

“The App store is about to hit 25 billion downloads,” Apple states. “The countdown has started. And someone’s going to win,” reads the promo.

Apple plans to award the 25 billionth downloader with a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card that can be spent in any iTunes-based venue owned by Apple, including the iBookstore, and the iTunes Music Store.

We previously estimated that Apple’s App Store was serving up around 1,000 downloads every two seconds. If that’s accurate, Apple’s timer should stop in about three days from now.
