In the first few days of every month, the AppStore editors make a list of the best apps and games. Their new selection was just published in the AppStore and there are quite a few apps worth checking.

The best app for the month of August is Hyperlapse from Instagram. It took the world by storm because no one was expecting a video timelapse app with this specs to be released on the iPhone. Microsoft Research has presented their work in that field about a month before, but it was only a way to work with existing video and do all the hyperlapse rendering on a computer. Microsoft's solution was a good one, but it needs all the processing power of a computer, while Instagram's solution fits on your iPhone and you can use it in seconds.

Hyperlapse is free and it doesn't require any account setup. you open it and you are presented with a button that looks like the shutter from the iOS Camera app. Tap on it and record you video. At the end you can leave the video at 6x speed, increase it up to 12x or turn it down to 1x. When the video looks the way you want it you can either save it to your camera roll or share it via Instagram or Facebook.

The game of August is SpellFall. It has been described as a unique tile-matching puzzle game where you cast magical spells to defeat monsters. The studio that makes SpellFall is Backflip and they have developed so far some great games: DragonVale, Army of Darkness Defense. SpellFall starts with the story of the main character and then it takes you through a training and shows you the moves. You basically need to defeat your opponent by matching three or more similar tiles in a puzzle.

The game is free, but beware of in-app purchases. You can buy up to $50 (€38.59) worth of charms to help you win the battle.

Other great games that were launched last month are: Star Wars Commander, Rules!, Bioshock, Madden NFL, Swing Copters, Alone, Godus, The Firm or Deep Under the Sky. Prices range from zero to $14.99 (€11.57).

When it comes to apps you can get Camu, Star Walk 2, Acorns, Spring, Replay Video Editor, ESPN Championship or the newly redesigned Foursquare app.  With just a few exceptions, all the apps are free.
