In what is a rare occasion for the company behind the Mac operating system, Apple has issued a press release announcing that App Store Downloads have topped 1.5 billion in a year since its debut.

“Apple today announced that customers have downloaded more than 1.5 billion applications in just one year from its revolutionary App Store, the largest applications store in the world,” the company’s official report reads. “The App Store is also growing at an incredible pace with more than 65,000 apps and more than 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program.”

A statement coming from Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, not only confirms the feat, but also the fact that he is actively performing his CEO duties once again, after his six-month-long medical leave.

“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, says. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

Apple then discloses that its revolutionary App Store holds more than 65,000 apps, which are available to iPhone and iPod touch users in 77 countries worldwide. This, Apple asserts, “allows developers to reach tens of millions of iPhone and iPod touch users around the world.”

“The App Store works with both iPod touch and iPhone including the new iPhone 3GS, the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet. Apple has shipped over 40 million of these devices that run apps from the App Store,” the report also reveals. Earlier, Apple announced that, in just a few days, the company had sold over one million iPhone 3G S units. Millions have downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software so far.
