Responding to complaints from hundreds of users buying MacBook Pros with 7200-rpm hard drives, Apple has, at last, issued a firmware update to address beeping / freezing issues. The update is highly recommended for users of a “June 2009 MacBook Pro.”

In regular Apple fashion, the company headquartered in Cupertino, California uses the Support section of its website to detail the particularities of Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0, as well as the issues it addresses. According to the Mac maker, “MacBook Pro Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0 reduces certain infrequent noises made by 7200-rpm drives. These drives shipped with the June 2009 MacBook Pro.”

“To complete the firmware update process, please follow the instructions in the updater application (/Applications/Utilities/Hard Drive Update.app). The updater will launch automatically when the installation is complete,” Apple instructs users. “New Hard Drive firmware will be: 0007APM2,” the Support piece mentions.

Using this method of informing customers of available updates, Apple usually links to additional tech notes for instructions on how to apply firmware updates, requirements, and the overall standard procedure for installing these updates. While such a document exists, the company fails to direct users from this portion of its website.

In the more detailed “About the Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0” note, the company thoroughly explains how to download and install the MacBook Pro Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0. Here, Apple warns that users should not reset, shut down, or turn off the power to their computer while updating the hard disk. “If there is an issue during the update, your hard disk may become unusable and the data on it could be lost,” Apple continues to outline.
