Owners of Apple’s $999 Thunderbolt Display running Snow Leopard or Lion are advised to install a new software update from Apple which addresses an issue with the monitor’s fans. Read on to learn more about the necessity of this particular download.
the contents of Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update version 1.1, Apple says on its Support site, “This update addresses a fan noise issue affecting a small number of Apple Thunderbolt Displays and improves stability.”
In other words, it’s not imperative for all
users to download this software package. However, since the company provides no means of determining whether or not you need it (except for the fan noise info, that is), you can download and apply the patch at will.
“The updater application will be installed in the Utilities folder inside the Application folder and will be launched automatically when you close this installer,” reads Apple’s tech note. “Please follow the instructions in the updater application to complete the update process.”
Describing the advantages of using its hardware, Apple says: “With built-in Thunderbolt technology — the fastest, most flexible I/O ever — the new Apple Thunderbolt Display can do things other displays simply can’t."
