Apple is further attempting to address user-reported issues with its newest desktop computers, the 27-inch Core i5 and Core i7 iMacs. One firmware update fixes Target Display Mode compatibility issues, the other resolves CPU workload, and display backlight problems.

According to Apple, the 27-inch iMac SMC Firmware Update 1.0 fixes Target Display Mode compatibility issues on 27-inch iMac computers. It is a small, 397KB download that requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 or later, and the 27-inch iMac EFI Update 1.0. This second update mentioned by Apple is actually the first one needs to perform, going by Apple’s description. Recommended for all quad-core Intel Core i5 and Core i7 iMacs, the update addresses the following, according to the Mac maker:

- Resolves an issue that sometimes caused high processor utilization while playing audio through the headphone output mini-jack. - Resolves an issue that prevented the display backlight from turning on after powering on the iMac.

The company then notes that, “When your computer restarts a gray screen will appear with a status bar to indicate the progress of the update. Do not disturb or shut off the power on your iMac during this update.” At 2.1MB in size, 27-inch iMac EFI FW Update 1.0 requires Mac OS X 10.6.3.

Earlier this week, Apple rolled out a minor update to the third incremental release of Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6.3. Cupertino mentioned that it had further taken steps to enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of Macintosh computers by addressing some of the recently discovered issues in Snow Leopard. Apple outlined that the new software “is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac,” including some specific fixes, such as compatibility with OpenGL-based applications.
