Apple has announced that pre-orders of its iPhone 4S have topped one million in a single day, beating the previous single day pre-order record of 600,000 (held by iPhone 4).

“We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing.

“The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do,” added Schiller.

Apple has confirmed that its latest iPhone will be available at all 245 Apple retail stores in the US on Friday, beginning at 8 a.m. Customers will be offered free Personal Setup service, which includes customization such as setting up email, apps from the App Store, and more.

The device comes with iOS 5 pre-installed. Described by Apple as “the world’s most advanced mobile operating system”, the OS comes packed with over 200 new features. iCloud, the company’s new set of free cloud services, will be fully integrated in the software.

Come October 14, customers will be able to choose an iPhone 4S in either black or white. The handset is priced at $199 for the 16GB model, at $299 for the 32GB model, and at $399 for the new 64GB model. Prices in Europe are in pretty much same range (in Euros).

The handset will not only be available from Apple’s online and retail stores, but also from AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, and select Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores. Select Apple Authorized Resellers will also be carrying the handset.

“iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics,” Apple said.

While the phone doesn’t come with a new design, it does boast an all new camera with advanced optics.
