In June, via Telcel

Apple continues to spread the iPhone craze all over the world, and it looks like Mexico will be among the countries to get the sleek handset in the near future. According to the on-line edition of El Universal, an important Mexican newspaper, the iPhone will be available in the North American country starting June 2008, brought by Telcel.

One of the most populous states in Latin America (more than 108 million people), Mexico has a quick-growing mobile penetration rate. With slightly over 50 million subscribers, Telcel is the largest mobile carrier in the country, so it's obvious why Apple plans to release the iPhone with the T-company: more subscribers, more units sold, more profit.

For the moment, there's no word about what the iPhone's price will be in Mexico. However, it can't be too different from the prices for which the handset is sold in the US: $499 (about 5,340 pesos) for the 16GB version and $399 (about 4,230 pesos) for the 8GB one.

Since Telcel launched its 3G network at the beginning of 2008, the 3G iPhone (assuming it will be released by then) could also be offered for the Mexican mobile users, which is obviously good news for them.

The iPhone, assuming you don't know too much about it, is a 11.6 millimeters thick handset that runs a variant of Mac OS X and offers users a wide 3.5 inch touchscreen display with 16 million colors support, quad-band GSM connectivity, EDGE, Wi-Fi, a multi-touch user interface, advanced multimedia features, advanced Internet (via the Safari browser) and email capabilities, a 2 Megapixel camera and so on.

In the same period with the Mexican iPhone launch, Apple will also release its handset in other Latin American countries and other important markets around the globe, including Australia, Singapore and, probably, China - the largest mobile market in the world.
