Like so many other companies on the IT market, Apacer came forth and released a new storage unit, namely an external, portable hard disk drive that benefits from the most recent iteration of the USB standard.

It seems that Green House is not the only company dealing in storage devices designed with support for the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard.

Granted, that particular company used NAND Flash memory and built a series of flash drives, not a hard disk drive.

It is Apacer that did the latter, having developed the AC230, a portable solution with a black, shiny enclosure and several storage capacity options.

It is meant to give “a boost in performance while backing up all quantities of data and media files, without the hassle of waiting.”

That said, the product has the 2.5-inch form factor and can feature capacities of 500 GB, 640 GB and 750 GB.

Reading is done at up to 92 MB/s, while writing is accomplished at up to 85 MB/s. This makes it very convenient for carrying large files, like videos, or for backup tasks, since file copying will be accomplished swiftly, at least compared to what an USB 2.0 unit would pull off.

Other specifications include a platter rotary speed of 5,400 RPM, a cache memory of 8 MB, backwards support for USB 2.0 (480 Mbps top speed) and a LED indicator (lights blue for USB 3.0 and red for USB 2.0).

All the above features are crammed inside a package measuring (L) 124 x (W) 80 x (H) 14 mm and weighing 143 grams.

Users should have no trouble using it with any desktop or laptop, considering that it works on just the energy provided by the USB connection itself.

“While USB 3.0 interface improves data transfer rates and saves consumers time, it is still priced high,” says the company. “Only the Apacer AC230 External HDD addresses the need for both the best transfer speed and an affordable price, making it the best choice on the market.”

Unfortunately, no prices were mentioned in the press release.
