Spam messages claim they were sent by Virgin Media

In case you're a Virgin Media customer and you also have a Ntlworld account, you may receive a spam message which asks you to provide your account ID and password, in order to avoid a potential removal from the database. This new spam campaign was first reported by Cable Forum after a Virgin Media user received the malicious message. The email, containing numerous grammatical errors, included the Virgin logo in order to trick the users and make them believe the message was really genuine.

"Attention: Ntlworld Subscribers", the spam message starts according to Cable Forum. "We recently discovered that your email address or someone's email in your Group is been used in sending bulk mail suspected to be spam or fraud related letters. You are hereby advised to forward Your Email ID & Password to us for Verification of Your email Account."

"If this is not completed by 20th December, 2007, we will be forced to delete your email account, as it may have been used for fraudulent purposes. We apologize for any inconveniences this may cause and appreciate your Assistance in helping us verify & resolve this Matter."

Cable Forum reports that someone inside Virgin Media has confirmed the spam campaign and has advised the users to ignore the message as soon as they reach the inboxes.

This isn't so dangerous if you're not so naive to send your login credentials to the details included in the fake email. I've seen too many similar email scams which bit the dust, but most of them were sent through popular networks such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

Just like usual, you're advised to ignore the unknown messages and mark them as spam. And keep this in mind: the companies that host your accounts would never ask for your login credentials, no matter what happens!
