Early reports suggest that Challa Krishnamurthy, an Indian organic farmer, started growing his crops on a 20-acre surface, in an attempt to set an example of sustainable agriculture to the entire region. Supposedly, he was shot by a garbage truck driver who was illegally dumping residual waste on the farmer's property. After filing several, unsuccessful petitions to the Pollution Control Board (PCB), the activist went to the press, but he was killed hours before he could meet with the journalists and expose the illegal operation unfolding on his ground.

It would appear that the entire area is a huge garbage dump site, and environmental activists who live in the area say that the government cannot be expected to do anything about it. Seeing how Indian authorities are separated by caste, creed and faith, they are highly unlikely to come to an agreement on the matter. Furthermore, national legislation on the matter is very scarce, and the PCB is incapable of handling the situation.

"If you take Bangalore, for instance, the environment is destroyed. We are not reacting to them hard enough, and the governments made of varied caste-creed-faith combinations cannot be expected to act impartially," complained Eco-Watch chairman, Suresh Heblikar.

In regard to Krishnamurthy's death, the police say they've already arrested a suspect, but that they've been unable to get a motif out of him. Investigations are currently underway, and local law-enforcement officials say they will keep the international media up-to-date, as new developments arise.

As far as the landfill goes, the farmer said that a local distillery and a sugarcane factory were dumping untreated residual waste on his property, and that the driver threatened him with a revolver the day before the killing. As the PCB turned a deaf ear to his case, the farmer decided to go to the media and expose the scandal. Apparently, that conflicted with the interests of the two companies, which decided he did not deserve to live anymore.
