I have anti-spam activeated on my computer, how come I still get spam?

This is really annoying - many people ask themselves (or worse, they ask me) why their anti-spam program isn't helping them too much. I can't really give them advice, because I don't bother much with anti-spam myself, as I found out that it isn't all that effective. Instead of getting 10 spam e-mails you only get about 6, it's the same thing to me, since I can easily ignore them, no matter in what numbers they come. I have 3 e-mail addresses: one for work (which gets no spam whatsoever, because only a few people know it) one that I use for experiments, which gets some spam, and my personal one which gets a lot of unwanted messages. Fortunately, Yahoo! manages to filter them pretty well.

But in any case, what is really annoying is the fact that if you search the web for an anti-spam solution, all the developers that you could find state on their website that they are global leaders in anti-spam and that they develop the best and easiest to use software. I don't have anything against anyone, or against the marketing process, but some vendors have less effective products on their list, but they still dub them as great. Users see their site, buy the software and then, when they still get spam, they wonder how that is possible. Well, some products are simply ineffective in some environments.

Having a security software on your machine is a great thing, but you need to know what you deploy. When buying something, try and get a look at the facts, try and see if that certain solution really fits you and if it's really what you need. If you don't get the right stuff then you just threw your money out the window. As for spam filters, well the cases in which they are really effective are not too many.
