LIFEbeat acted as organizers of the event that was to take place in New York's Webster Hall, on July 18, with the purpose of promoting HIV/AIDS awareness.
In the very last minute, a spokesperson from LIFEbeat announced that, due to strong protests from the members of the gay community, the only option available is to cancel the show altogether.
Among the various artists that were supposed to appear on the stage were also Beenie Man and T.O.K, whose presence scandalized the world for their well known homophobic attitude and lyrics.
In the past, Beenie Man released a single that proposes the hanging of lesbians, while T.O.K asks for all gay man to be hanged.
The organizers said that the artists in questions have been assaulted with thousands of phone calls, most of them threatening, which made them believe that there would be safety issues to deal with during the live performance.
'While the organization's staff and board believe very strongly in the positive purpose and intention of this event, the possibility of violence at the concert from the firestorm incited by a select group of activists makes canceling the event the only responsible action.'
Beenie Man and T.O.K both said that, quote, 'AIDS is an epidemic that doesn't discriminate. It's not a gay or a straight thing, it is a fight for life', but they made no excuses as to the content of their popular and mostly homophobic songs.
