Legendary actor Anthony Hopkins, aged 73, is now rediscovering the benefits and joys of living a healthy life after wife Stella Arroyave helped him become 80 pounds slimmer by overhauling his lifestyle completely.

In 2008, tired of being overweight, Hopkins gave in to the pleas of his third wife and agreed to change his life for the better by starting to eat healthier and going to the gym regularly.

Two years later, he’s proud to say he maintains his new weight, feels more energetic than ever and is happy to be alive, as Contact Music can confirm.

However, it wasn’t without sacrifice that he managed this feat, since he had to learn to forego all his favorite treats and to discipline himself to abide by the 800 calories a day diet.

“My wife’s no dictator, but she said I must stick to a regimen. So I’m in the gym six days a week, I power walk, live on 800 calories a day. No pasta. No seconds. A sandwich occasionally. Now I’m a health nut,” the star says in a recent interview cited by the aforementioned e-zine.

His diet was entirely different before his wife stepped in, which was also visible in how much heavier he was.

“I was addicted to bread, cookies, whatnot. I love all the bad stuff,” Hopkins shares. Clearly, all these are off limits now.

The downside to the amazing weight loss is that the star only now learns he no longer has any use for his old wardrobe – so he simply gave it away.

“I can’t get back into my wardrobe. I gave it all away to some mission. I tried tailoring the pants but they look ridiculous,” the actor admits in the same interview.

In a past interview, Hopkins admitted his weight had gotten out of control and a drastic measure like the 800-calorie diet was in order to get the needed results.

“I got tired of being heavy, so I went on a really good regime of eating healthy and exercising for an hour a day. I’m not a nutty, macrobiotic kind of guy, but I enjoy being alive,” the actor said a while back, as cited by the same Contact Music.
