A few days ago, hacktivists threatened to launch attacks in response to the Internet shutdown and the curfew imposed in the Kashmir region. Anonymous has joined forces with the ZCompany Hacking Crew (ZHC) and started targeting Indian websites.

The hackers breached the sites of the Jammu and Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation (ksrtc.co.in), the Nashik Municipal Corporation (nashikcorporation.gov.in), the Energy Minister of the Government of Rajasthan (mop.rajasthan.gov.in), and the one of the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference political party.

In addition, several commercial Indian websites appear to have been hacked and defaced, along with UK sites StarzTV.co.uk, starzdating.co.uk and channelaka.tv.

“International Media is silent on the issue. People need to know what's happening in Kashmir. We'll probably target few more media sites,” the hackers stated.

At the time of writing, most of the commercial sites were still defaced, but the ones managed by the Indian government were restored.

The strict curfew, the media blackout and the Internet shutdown coincide with the execution of Mohammad Afzal Guru, an individual accused of attacking the Indian Parliament in 2001.

Updated to include statement from hackers.
