In several communications over YouTube and Twitter, individuals operating under the banner name of Anonymous hacker outfit have announced that actions against online accounts of jihadist terrorists have been initiated.

The group that initiated the operation called it #OpCharlieHebdo, in reference to the recent attacks that took place in Paris. They announce that monitoring the online activity of terrorists has already started and that the purpose is to shut down the social network accounts belonging to jihadist terrorists; Al Qaeda and the Islamic state have been mentioned in the communication.

On Thursday, a message on a Twitter account affiliated to the campaign urged readers to find the Twitter profiles of the terrorists and report them.

The owner of the account also informed of a website called OpCharlieHebdo that may be a fake. The site features a countdown timer to a yet unknown event.

All this is a clear effort to fight for freedom of speech and against unnecessary violent acts resulting from this. In the attack on January 7 on Charlie Hebdo, a French, satirical weekly newspaper that also contained cartoons and jokes on religious themes, Islamist extremists opened fire at the publication’s office in Paris and killed 12 individuals, five cartoonists among them.

At least two videos delivering messages from Anonymous (in French, available below) have been published on YouTube by now and several messages related to the subject have appeared on Pastebin, most of them in French.
