14 DAY TRIAL // The Anonymous hacktivist collective vehemently denies any involvement into the intrusions and data breaches suffered by Sony and suggests that someone might be trying to frame it.
In a lengthy press release the group stresses that it has never been engaged in credit card theft and that this kind of action would stand against its goal of gaining as much public support as possible.
"Whoever did perform the credit card theft did so contrary to the 'modus operandi' and intentions of Anonymous.
"Public support is not gained by stealing credit card info and personal identities, we are trying to fight criminal activities by corporations and governments, not steal credit cards," the group writes.
The collective's public denial comes after Sony reported finding a file called "Anonymous" which contained "We are Legion," a part of the group's slogan, on one of its compromised servers.
In a letter to members of Congress, the company also suggested that Anonymous' earlier DDoS attacks against the PlayStation Network served as cover for the intrusions that led to the compromise of personal and financial information (in some cases) of over 75 million people.
The group also wants the world to remember that government contractors were caught conspiring to discredit WikiLeaks and their enemies by manipulating the public perception about them.
"The fact is that Anonymous has brought a great deal of discomfort to powerful entities such as Booz Allen Hamilton, Palantir, and much of the federal government," the group writes. "If a legitimate and honest investigation into credit card theft is conducted, Anonymous will not be found liable."
In the end, Anonymous is trying to convey that this kind of attack against Sony has not been sanctioned by the group's high ranking members and coordinators. That doesn't exclude the possibility that some supporter acted on their own.
