When a picture of Anne Hathaway looking distraught while swimming in the ocean emerged in the press accompanied by a story she was close to drowning, everyone held it to be true. It turns out the actress was never in mortal danger.

Speaking at the Sundance festival about her film “Song One,” the actress also touched on the subject of her presumed near-drowning.

“I'm fine. ... I really do appreciate everybody's concern but that was a picture that had a false story attached to it. The real story is not as interesting,” she explained.

At the time, the story seemed credible, as it had photographic proof, as well as numerous details to explain the incident. Nobody knew it was just a made-up piece of news.

Hathaway did appear in a photo, seemingly struggling for breath as she swam in the ocean, during her Hawaii vacation at the beginning of January. Now, the actress says the entire thing was taken out of context.

She was supposedly dragged out to sea when she was caught in the riptide. She began crying for help and was lucky to be heard by a surfer in the vicinity. The man took her back to shore, to the arms of her husband, but managed to scrape her foot on a reef in the process.

Joking about the entire incident, Hathaway said that after the story made headline news, she was teased by some of her friends. She was called out for playing Charades or for pulling a “Titanic” in some gentle ribbing by friends.

Meanwhile, the “Les Miserables” actress is present at the Sundance Festival to promote her film “Song One,” which tells the story of a woman with broken ties to her family who returns home when her brother enters a coma.

As she struggles to deal with her emotions, she begins exploring the Brooklyn music scene.
