Animal Crossing is a social simulator that has been dubbed a "communication game" by Nintendo. It is an open-ended game, where a player can live a separate life with little preset plot or mandatory tasks. Players assume the role of a new resident to the town. The gender of your character depends on the answers given to Rover on the train.

It is rumored that this character will be a playable character in the upcoming game Super Smash Bros. Brawl. If so, players may be able to change the gender as a costume. There are, also, certain tasks which players can choose to complete and goals they can choose to achieve. The game is played out in real-time - observing days, weeks, months and even years - 29, according to
Nintendo- using the GameCube's internal clock. There are many actual events and holidays spanning the year, including Independence Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving, among others. Other regular activities such as early morning fitness classes and fishing tournaments are included in the game as well.

Glitches

Trip to nowhere:
Have a second memory card in slot B with no town data in it. Three memory blocks will be used to create travel data and you will get on the train. You will instantly return to the starting screen. When you start the game again, you will get off the train as if you had just started the game.

Animal personalities:
If you have two animals in your town that have the same personality, sometimes they will say the same thing as the other one in town. For example, if your cow says "Moo La La" after every sentence, a kangaroo with the same personality will also start to say "Moo La La".

If two animals have the same personality, it does not mean they might share the same word. Some animals have glitches in them and when one of those animals talks to the other, they "inherit" their word. Two animals that this happens with are Chevre and Candi.

Forgetful animals:
This trick requires two memory cards with two towns. First, meet everyone in town. Visit the other town on the other memory card. Sometimes animals will move there from your town. Visit the other towns enough and they may move back. They will forget who you are and you will have to meet them again.

Obtain DUMMY item:
When there is snow on the ground, your neighbors may set up igloos. Sometimes, an animal will want to play a game with you, where you have to pick two bags. One bag contains free furniture and the other has wallpaper which you must buy for 3,000 Bells. Occasionally, an item called DUMMY will appear. This is a piece of furniture that is actually a glitch within the game. It looks like a floating white triangle with "dummy" written out in Japanese red text. This item does not appear in your catalog and you cannot sell it.

In the section for "animal personalities", I don't think it's a glitch when different animals share the same phrases after talking to each other. It happens all the time when I've played. It seems about a common as when they share clothes. It can be funny or irritating when an animal picks up a phrase totally out of character or when 2/3 of the animals start sharing the same phrase.
