Users of mobile phones running under Google's Android operating system would soon have the possibility to enjoy a new flavor of the popular Angry Birds mobile game, which would be distributed exclusively via the Amazon Appstore, namely Angry Birds Rio.

The new version of the game would include some new characters, namely two rare macaws, Blu and Jewel. The game was developed in collaboration with Twentieth Century Fox, which would soon launch a motion picture called Rio.

“The Android platform has seen phenomenal growth, and it’s great that new avenues for app distribution are opening up,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio.

“The openness of the Android platform works for the benefit of consumers and developers alike. It has been delightful to team up with Amazon to bring the Angry Birds franchise to this great new application marketplace.”

The mobile games developer also announced that the ad-free versions of Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons would also become available for purchase soon, both of which would be exclusive to the Amazon Appstore.

“Amazon is thrilled to work with a leading developer like Rovio in offering our customers Angry Birds Rio for Android exclusively in the Amazon Appstore,” said Aaron Rubenson, category leader for Amazon Appstore. “We think Angry Birds Rio is sure to be an instant customer favorite.”

In Angry Birds Rio, the Angry Birds that we all know are kidnapped and brought to the city of Rio, where they escape and try to save the aforementioned macaws, Blu and Jewel.

The Angry Birds Rio mobile game should become available for Android users with a number of 60 dedicated levels at launch, while more of them would be added into the mix via future app updates.

As stated above, the game was developed and would launch in conjunction with the motion picture Rio. The movie is expected to hit theaters on April 15, 2011.

“Angry Birds Rio is a fun and interactive way to introduce millions of fans to the exciting world of 'RIO,' and we are proud to work with both Rovio and Amazon to make this experience available to users on the Android platform,” said Peter Levinsohn, president of new media and digital distribution for Twentieth Century Fox.

“The Amazon Appstore will be a great new way for consumers to download all their favorite Android apps, and we’re excited to offer Angry Birds Rio as one of the first pieces of content to be made available to consumers through this new store.”

Angry Birds Rio will be released for Android phones and tablets in the Amazon Appstore here.
