Remember the days when the only way to keep in touch with your loved ones, whenever you were apart, was either by phone (but not mobile) or snail mail? For Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, that’s reality, and at the same time, their way of keeping their love alive.

Last year, after 9 years in which they managed to stick by their number one rule at home (i.e. never to work at the same time, this way ensuring that at least one parent was at home with the kids), they were both away on location at the same time.

Jolie was directing “Unbroken” in Australia and Pitt was shooting for “Fury” in London. One of the ways in which they kept in contact – and their most favorite, from what Angelina tells TV Week – was writing love letters to each other.

Isn’t that the most romantic and adorable thing you ever heard about a celebrity? Or at least today?

“He was supportive from a distance and it was quite romantic in a way,” the actress / director explains.

“We decided to be of that time when we could imagine he was in the European theatre and I was in the Pacific theater and we wrote hand-written letters to each other that were very connecting for us, thinking of the people that were separated for months if not years at a time back then,” Jolie adds.

“Unbroken” is Angelina’s second directorial endeavor, telling the brave story of the Olympic athlete and World War II hero Louis Zamperini, who personally gave her his blessing to turn his life into film.

In the same interview, the star recalls how happy Zamperini was to see a first cut of “Unbroken” just a short while before he passed away from pneumonia on July 2.

“I brought him the film on my laptop in the hospital and it was amazing seeing someone at the end of their life watching their life unfold again, at the same time their body was shutting down,” she says.

Adds the actress, “He wanted me to make the movie to show something hopeful about the strength of the human spirit that can pull us through. He reminded me to have my surgery in the year that I did and he reminded me to appreciate every day of my life.”

Angelina Jolie and Louis Zamperini did indeed share a very special bond: they became friends the day they met. A few months back, they did a joint interview on The Today Show and you could tell how much love and respect they had for each other. Zamperini even jokingly called her his “girlfriend.”
