Angelina Jolie was, without a doubt, the biggest star in attendance at the 2015 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards, held at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif. She made it a girls’ night out, bringing daughters Zahara, 10, and Shiloh, 8, with her as her dates.

Angelina won one award of the two she was nominated for, but she didn’t get slimed, even though tradition has it that winners must all leave the stage covered in green goo. Video of her acceptance speech is available below.

Angelina wins with “Maleficent”

In 2014, Angelina Jolie starred as Maleficent in Disney’s live-action movie of the same name, aiming to show another side of one of the world’s most famous villains. The film was both a critical and a commercial hit, and as it became obvious at the weekend, Jolie is not yet done reaping praise for it.

At the 2015 Kids Choice Awards, she won Favorite Villain, and lost Favorite Movie Actress to Emma Stone. The votes came from the audience, so winning was really no surprise.

When her name was called, before she started making her way to the stage, the actress and director hugged it out with her two adorable girls, who were clearly psyched to see their mother a winner.

An acceptance speech with some meaning

Acceptance speeches are rarely very meaningful. Sure, they can be emotional and beautiful, but most of the time they’re a special moment for those saying them, because it’s their chance to finally thank all the people who have helped them get to where they are.

Angelina Jolie made her acceptance speech at the Kids Choice Awards all about the little people watching her: the kids who had voted for her, delivering an empowering message on how being different isn’t something to be ashamed or afraid of, because it’s what makes us special.

“When I was a kid I was told - like Maleficent - that I was different. But then I realized something: different is good. So maybe you don’t fit in. Be yourself. And when someone tells you that you are different, just smile and hold your head up, and be proud. And as your villain, I would say, ‘Cause a little trouble. It is good for you!’,” she said.
