The Facebook page of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been flooded by spam containing all sort of malicious images and insults.

According to the BBC, the modified pictures dirtying the official social networking account compared her to Nazi leaders, Hitler and Joachim von Ribbentrop, his Foreign Minister, among them.

The origin of the bad content has not been determined, but many speculate that it was delivered by Ukrainian users upset by the alleged closeness to the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

It seems that the number of ill-mannered comments funneled in by the thousands and were directed at every post on the Chancellor’s Facebook page.

Angela Merkel’s office issued a statement yesterday, saying that the spam would be deleted and that they regretted that true contributions were lost in the mass of slanderous comments.

“Also applies to these spam, what is in our Netiquette: we welcome substantive and constructive contributions on this page. We reserve the right however to delete posts that violate the law, violate or contain about insults, slander, racism and political extremism,” reads the latest post on the politician’s page, translated via Bing translation service.

The flurry of offensive content was fueled by recent footage of the German Chancellor sitting next to the Russian President at the 2014 World Cup Final in Brazil.
