24-year-old woman says comedian faked his death by cancer 29 years ago

Andy Kaufman, best described as a Dadaist comedian though he insisted he never told a joke in his life, died of lung cancer in May 1984 but, according to his daughter (the one no one knew about until last night), he’s alive and well.

Check out the video below for the woman’s shocking statement. It plays right in with the countless death hoaxes that have surrounded Kaufman’s larger than life persona since 1984: he, pretty much like Tupac Shakur, Elvis Presley and, more recently, Michael Jackson, is believed to have staged his death to get away from all the unwanted attention.

The scene of the shocking revelation was the 9th Annual Andy Kaufman Awards at the Gotham Comedy Club in NYC, where a 24-year-old woman took to the stage to speak with Kaufman’s brother about the star’s private life.

She says Andy is living with her and her mother, and that he faked his death because he wanted to be a “stay at home dad” and just chill with his loved ones without having his every move scrutinized.

She also says he had planned to make the big reveal himself at awards gala, but changed his mind at the last moment. It’s interesting to note that Michael goes along with everything, even saying at one point he won’t make her name public to keep Andy’s secret safe.

Of course, this could be a hoax in keeping with Kaufman’s typical brand of humor. What do you think?
