It appears that the iPad's global domination might be challenged. New information coming from ABI Research showcases that for the first time ever, Android devices have taken the iPad in Q2 of 2013.

That means that combined Android tablet manufacturers shipped more units than Apple did with its iPads. Revenue coming from slate sales was however equally divided between the two parts.

Even if the Android ecosystem is split between companies like Samsung, Amazon, Asus and many many other pretenders, the diversity of choices and smaller price tags have managed to catch the interest of consumers worldwide. More specifically, 7-inch tablet shipments seem to dominate overall Android sales.

Apple itself appears to be heading down the same road, willingly or unwillingly. According to ABI, it is estimated that 60% of total iPad shipments in the spring quarter consist of iPad minis.

Nevertheless, a new iPad refresh is expected to drop next month, and that might be all the Cupertino tech giant needs to get back on track.
