Google's Android platform is indeed rocking the party in the United States, at least this is what the latest reports from research firms show.

The mobile platform already managed to gain over 40 percent of the US market, and is expected to increase its share even more in the near future.

The latest report from the comScore MobiLens service shows that Google's Android OS was present on 41.8 percent of the smartphones in the three months ending in July 2011.

The research firm notes that 82.2 million people in the U.S. ages 13 and older had a smartphone in the time frame, up 10 percent from the previous three months, and that Android gained 5.4 percentage points during this period.

Apple's iOS platform ended the time frame on the second position with 27 percent of the smartphone market, marking an increase of 1 percentage point from the previous three months.

Canadian mobile phone maker Research In Motion was placed on the third position, with 21.7 percent share, while Microsoft's Windows platform and the Symbian OS were on the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, with 5.7 and 1.9 percent of the market.

The research firm also showed that Samsung managed to remain the top manufacturer on the US mobile phone market, and that one in four American phone users own a Samsung device.

“The study surveyed more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers and found Samsung to be the top handset manufacturer overall with 25.5 percent market share. Google Android continued to gain ground in the smartphone market reaching 41.8 percent market share,” the research firm notes.
