It seems that Google's Android operating system is closer to becoming final on the high-end Nokia N900 device than a final version of MeeGo would be, since the device won't get that operating system in an official manner.

We've already reported on Android being ported to Nokia N900, and new details on this are available now, showing that the process is advancing, and that newer features are currently working.

As can be seen in the video below, available courtesy of the NITDroid project (via Engadget), N900 is playing along pretty nicely with Android, and it can even make or receive calls.

Moreover, it seems that it should soon be able to support cellular data connections while running under this unofficial Android solution, though a lot of work still needs to be done.

All of these are available courtesy of the NITDroid project, which is aimed at the delivery of a fully working Android solution for Nokia's N900 slider.

“This project is hoping to create a stable and working port of the Android OS for the Nokia Internet Tablets (N8x0 and N900). We would like to invite anyone who would like to join to the development of a successful port of to the NIT hardware,” the project's website reads.

The Nokia N900 is one of the nicest mobile phones the Finnish handset vendor Nokia brought to the market last year, but it seems that its future is not as bright as one might have expected, though these unofficial ports might change things a little.

As stated above, the video embedded at the bottom of this article should offer you a glimpse at how things are looking at the moment with the Android port for Nokia N900.

However, there is no telling on when the final version of this solution would be released into the wild, though we'll keep an eye on any news from the NITDroid project to learn more on this.
