Google’s Android operating system has managed to take over the US smartphone market a while ago, and the platform remains on top for another quarter, the latest data from Nielsen shows.

On the smartphone segment, Android was leader with no less than 46.3 percent of all smartphones in the US in Q4 2011, the research firm notes. However, the new iPhone 4S managed to prove more appealing to new buyers than Android devices did.

During the fourth quarter of the last year, Google’s OS was the top OS in the United States, followed by iOS with 37 percent market share and RIM’s BlackBerry platform with 6 percent market share.

“As of Q42011, 46 percent of US mobile consumers had smartphones, and that figure is growing quickly. In fact, 60 percent of those who said they got a new device within the last three months chose a smartphone over a feature phone,” Nielsen also notes.
