Google’s Android operating system is gaining more and more market share in the United States, and the latest data from comScore shows nothing different.

During the three-month period ending October 2011, Google’s mobile operating system has been loaded on 46.3 percent of smartphones, the research firm notes.

The data comes from the comScore MobiLens service and is based on a study that surveyed a number of over 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers.

In addition to placing Android at the top, the study also shows that Samsung was the top handset maker in the US in the timeframe, with a market share of 25.5 percent.

“For the three-month average period ending in October, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices,” comScore notes.

“Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.5 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG with 20.6 percent share and Motorola with 13.6 percent share.

“Apple strengthened its position at #4 with 10.8 percent share of mobile subscribers (up 1.3 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five with 6.6 percent share.”

During the aforementioned period of time, a number of 90 million people in the United States owned a smartphone, marking an increase of 10 percent when compared to the previous three months.

While reaching 46.3 percent market share, Android gained 4.4 percentage points from the previous three-month period.

Apple’s iOS remained on the second position with 28.1 percent market share in the smartphone area, 1 percentage point up from the previous timeframe.

ComScore also announced that Research in Motion’s BlackBerry platform remained on the third position with 17.2 percent share, while Microsoft’s Windows Phone (Windows Mobile included) accounted for 5.4 percent of the market. Symbian remained in top five with 1.6 percent share.

Last week, we saw a similar report from Nielsen, which showed that, while Android did manage to remain a leader on the US market, the latest flavor of Microsoft’s mobile OS, Windows Phone, was getting ready to leave Symbian behind.
