Wondering when your smartphone will get Android M?

Google introduced Android M during its I/O 2015 developer conference in San Francisco yesterday and detailed some of its main features on stage.

Naturally, the announcement prompted the burning question - when will my smartphone get updated to Android M? While we don’t have the exact update timeline for most of the models floating on the market right now, we can make some speculations and predictions.

Speaking at the “What’s new in Android” talk, Google’s Chet Haase revealed some details about the commercial availability of Android M.

While the Android L Developer Preview is already available for download, he said that Google planned to push out an update for it sometime towards the end of June and another one towards the end of July.

That being said, the final version of Android M might be ready for public release sometime this fall. Looking back, Google launched Android 5.0 Lollipop in November, so the search giant will probably follow the same pattern this year.

Google’s own Nexus devices

Nexus devices are among the first to get a new Android update, so that’s going to be the case this year as well.

Google has already made available the Android M Developer Preview for the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player, so we can speculate that these are the models that will get the final update first.

There’s a big chance that the Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 (2012) won’t get Android M, but the Nexus 7 (2013) will probably be updated.

HTC

HTC is the only device maker that has already made an announcement regarding Android M. The company’s own Jeff Gordon tweeted that the One M9 and One M9+ would be updated to Android M. He added that more information would be announced soon.

But looking back at how HTC handled things with Lollipop, as it was pretty sluggish to provide the 5.0 update to its HTC One M8 (we’re going to take last year’s flagship as reference), we have to wonder. The company’s previous-gen One M8 got the update in January 2015.

Samsung

From here, we step into the realm of pure speculation. We know that Samsung is prepping the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for its current Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge flagships, but the two models will certainly get the Android M treatment at some point.

Last year, Samsung was relatively quick to pick up the Lollipop update for its Galaxy S5, which got the soft bump up starting December. The Galaxy S4 and Note 4 followed in February.

Samsung is also expected to introduce its next-gen flagship, the Galaxy Note 5, at IFA 2015 in September 2015. And who knows, Google might prove faster this year and roll out Android M just in time for the grand event.

LG

LG was one of the device makers who were pretty quick to pick up Android Lollipop and offered it to its LG G3 starting December.

The company has just released the LG G4, which runs Android 5.1 out of the box, so naturally, we assume that the flagship will once again be among the first to get the Android M treatment.

Motorola

Motorola beat everyone to the punch last year by providing Android 5.0 Lollipop for its Moto X (2014) on the same month Google rolled it out (aka November).

It was also very quick to roll out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, so we can expect Android M to land on Motorola’s flagships as soon as it is out.

We are waiting for Motorola to launch its next-gen Moto X (2015), so maybe the phone will come equipped with Android M out of the box.

Sony

Sony is a bit of a sad story. The company promised that it would update its phones to Lollipop last year, quite early on, but proved to move increasingly slow in achieving this end.

So the Xperia Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact only got the Lollipop treatment in March. Hopefully, Sony will move a lot faster this year.

ASUS

ASUS is another horror show. The company has been promising the Lollipop update for its Zenfone 4,5,6 for months now, but has kept postponing the release.

Not so long ago, it was revealed that the update for the Zenfone 5 was delayed for another 3 to 4 months. So while the world is prepping for Android M, Zenfone users are still hoping for Lollipop.

On the other hand, ASUS might decide that it is a good idea to skip a stage and update its Zenfone bunch directly to Android M.

The Zenfone 2 is the only phone that launched with Android 5.0 Lollipop out of the box, and we pray to the gods that ASUS won’t take forever to update it.
