During the first I/O 2015 keynote, Google announced Android M, the newest version of its mobile operating system coming later this year.

Along with the Android M announcement, Google also confirmed that a Developer Preview build would be available for download today.

However, not all devices will be compatible with the new Android M Developer Preview build. The good news is Android M will be available for some of the most popular Nexus devices.

So, beginning later today, owners of Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and Nexus Player will be able to download Android M Developer Preview.

According to Google, the Android M Developer Preview includes an updated SDK with tools, system images for testing on the official Android emulator, and system images for testing on Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and Nexus Player devices.

Android M will bring quite a few new features that are meant to give users more privacy controls, as well as better battery life. It's unclear how many of these will be available in Android M Developer Preview, but we will find out later today.

“Doze,” granular permissions and app links

So here is what you can expect to get in Android M. First of all, Google has refined the permissions system, so users will have control of app permission and choose whether to grant a certain permission or not.

With the new feature called Doze, Android M will use significant motion detection to learn whether or not a device has been left unattended for a while.

While in the sleep mode, Android will “exponentially back off background activity, trading off a little bit of app freshness for longer battery life.”

There aren't too many details on when exactly the final version of Android M will be available for download, but one thing is sure: Android M launches this fall.
