The new version seems to be several days old

The next version of Android has already been officially introduced to developers, but Google has yet to make it available to the masses. Even though anyone with a compatible device (Nexus 5) can now install the developer preview build of Android L, this version of the platform is far from being finished.

Unfortunately, it’s unclear when the final version of Android L will be announced, though everyone expects Google to schedule its next important event sometime in October.

Until then, it appears that Google continues to test Android L internally, but also by putting it in the developers’ hands. The latest version of Android L seems to date from five days ago, Myce reports.

The new LRW87D build has been recently spotted in the Chromium issue tracker. More importantly, the build is not only mentioned in the document, but a video has been published as well.

It’s not like we didn’t have our fair share of Android L videos, but the last one mentions a build of the operating system that’s been released less than a week ago.

The video presents an issue with the video playback and is less than 30 seconds long. You can see the new design of the Android icons at the bottom of the screen, but aside from that there isn’t any new stuff demoed in the video.

The next version of Android might be released in October

The Android L is expected to be launched under a different name, which has yet to be announced by Google. Rumor has it that the next version of the mobile platform will be called Android Lemon Meringue Pie when it’s released next month.

The Nexus 6 or Nexus X will be the first smartphone to ship with Android L out of the box, but other smartphones will receive the update in the coming months.

For example, HTC promised that One M8 owners would receive an update to Android L within 3 months since the new platform is officially introduced by Google.

We can’t say the same about Samsung or LG, which seems to be slower when it comes to important updates for their smartphones. Motorola, on the other hand, is among the handset makers that offer software updates for their products very fast.

In fact, we expect Motorola to be among the first companies to launch Android L upgrades for its smartphones. If Google launches the new version of Android in October, a few smartphones that are now available on the market might even get the upgrade by the end of the year.
