Google's Android operating system is topping the charts in the UK, accounting for half of all smartphones sold in the country, recent data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows.

According to data coming from the research firm, the mobile operating system accounts for 49.9 percent of smartphone sales in the country.

Apple's iPhone enjoys less than half of that, at 18.5 percent market share, and it only on the third position, with RIM's BlackBerry OS on the second place with 22.5 percent share.

The data is based on a survey the firm conducted in the 12 seeks ended October 2nd, Cnet reports. Moreover, the research company says that 43.8 percent of all mobile phone users in the UK own a smartphone.

Since these results are based on data collected before the new iPhone 4S arrived on shelves, as should be waiting for the next survey results to emerge to see how well the two OSes did in the past weeks.
