The update has started rolling out around the world

When Android 5.0 rolled out into the wild, Motorola was one of the first device makers to pick up the update for its lineup of high-end devices and not only.

Now, it seems like history is going to repeat itself with the latest Android 5.1 build, as Motorola has just announced it has begun the rollout of the new OS version for the second-gen Moto X.

But there’s a twist to the story this time: on top of adding the Android 5.1-specific tweaks and improvements, Motorola is slipping in something of its own.

Android 5.1 for the second-gen Moto X brings a special feature

Owners of the second-gen Moto X who are going to update their phone to Android 5.1 will be able to take advantage of a handy new Moto Action called Chop Twice. This allows you to shake your phone twice (like in the .GIF at the end of the article) in order to activate the flashlight.

So from now on, when you find yourself in a dark environment, you won’t have to fumble around in order to find your phone, unlock the screen and find the icon for the flashlight application. Just shake your phone twice and you’re good to go.

Motorola initiated a soak-test for Android 5.1 in Brazil not so long ago, but now the availability of the new build is spreading out, so international users should expect to see the new OS version on their phones soon enough. However, Motorola mentions that the announcement only applies to unlocked versions, so carrier-branded models are not included.

Android 5.1 Lollipop brings the usual bug fixes and enhancements

For the second-gen Moto X, Android 5.1 Lollipop will bring a lot of usability improvements such as the option to block interruptions until the next alarm.

Moreover, users will now be able to choose to enter a scheduled downtime early, and the new build also brings some icons to the volume settings panel that match those that will show in the status bar (None, Priority).

In addition, the option to alter notification volume controls while media is playing will be added, and users will now be able to swipe a heads-up notification to remove it from the screen. It will remain in the notifications tray and you can dismiss it later.

Some camera improvements have also been added to the overall bundle, so keep an eye out for the update, Moto X 2014 users!
