14 DAY TRIAL // We've been hearing that Samsung has plans to roll out the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for its Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge units, and now a new report suggests that this might happen as soon as next month.
A few days ago, we told you that, apparently, T-Mobile started sending out the Android 5.1.1 update for the Galaxy S6 edge, but it turned out the update was actually an unfinished version which got released into the wild by mistake, so the carrier halted the rollout.
We assumed Samsung still had some work to do on the update, but if we are to believe the info posted on the website of Canadian carrier Roger, we should be expecting to see the new OS version fly out to these handsets as soon as next month.
A big update for the Galaxy S6 is coming soon
We know that Samsung’s new update for the two models should add a new Guest Mode feature as well as enhanced camera abilities, including the option of snapping RAW photos (something the LG G4 and HTC One M9 already offer).
It’s the first time we've been given a potential release date for the update, so it’s encouraging to see that things are moving in the right direction.
Since Rogers will apparently start updating its Galaxy S6 devices to Android 5.1 next month, there’s reason to believe that other carriers around the world (at least in the US) will be picking up the new software version around the same time.
As for the new additions that are going to be offered with Android 5.1, it’s worth mentioning that Guest Mode is an option that has been available ever since Android 5.0 went live. Even so, for some reason, Samsung decided not to include it in its version of Lollipop.
The option to capture RAW photos is also an integral part of Android 5.0 Lollipop, and many were disappointed when it became apparent that the Galaxy S6 did not offer this feature.
However, Samsung seems to be looking to fix things now, as HTC did via a software update for its One M9.
Last but not least, we hope that the new update will add some battery optimization features too, although we haven’t heard anything related to this matter.
