Another GPe device is receiving the latest Android version

A few days ago, we told you that Motorola’s Moto G Google Play Edition started receiving the Android 5.1 Lollipop update.

Google’s latest version hasn’t been around for long and has only been rolled out for some Nexus devices. But last week, the Motorola phone got the update as well.

Well, today, we bring you the same news for the LG G Pad 8.3 GPe. According to the Android Police (and a Twitter user), Google started to roll out the new build (it weighs 200MB if you’re upgrading from Android 5.0) for the tablet. You can even download it from here if you want.

Some new features you'll encounter in Android 5.1

Android 5.1 brings new features like support for multiple SIM cards, Device Protection, and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones.

This means that devices that have been updated to Android 5.1 will be allowed to use more than one SIM card if they have multiple SIM slots.

The second major feature users will encounter in Android 5.1 is Device Protection, which provides an extra layer of security.

When lost or stolen, an Android 5.1 smartphone or tablet will remain locked until the owner signs in with their Google account. The action is viable even if someone has performed a reset to factory settings on the device.

We were hoping that Android 5.1 would solve the pesky memory leak bug that has been around ever since Android 5.0 came along, but sadly this didn't prove to be the case.

Android 5.1.1 already in the works

However, a few days ago, it was revealed that Google was already working on the Android 5.1.1 update, so a solution for the issue might come with that release. The memory leak bug has been reported in the AOSP issue tracker and Google has already managed to fix it.

We know this because the thread covering this particular problem has been closed and marked with “This has been fixed internally. We do not currently have a timeline for public release.”

But Android 5.1.1 seems like a likely candidate.

Before you start updating your LG G Pad 8.3 GPe to Android 5.1, take into account that the new build might cause some issues to your tablet. We have already detailed the problems that Nexus users have been facing after updating their models, so go ahead and read our earlier piece before anything.
