Android 4.4 KitKat is still king of the hill

Android 5.0 Lollipop has been out and about for a few months now, but it turned out to be a release plagued by a frustrating high number of issues.

On top of that, the update has not reached a wide number of users. Sure the Nexus family has been updated (including the older Nexus 4 smartphone and Nexus 10 tablet), and so have the Moto X / G and Samsung Galaxy S5 phones and NVIDIA Shield Tablet, but the majority of mobile devices are still waiting to get the software bump.

That’s exactly the picture described by Google’s latest Google Play Store results released for early January 2015.

Android 5.0 Lollipop might be out but no one is using it

According to the report, less than 0.1% Android users are using Lollipop on their device. This can’t be considered a good start, if we’re to compare with the fact that Android 4.4 KitKat reached 1.1% of the Android using population during its first month out.

Lollipop has been released two months ago, but KitKat still rules in terms of dominion over the Android ecosystem.

This particular software build holds 39.1% of the market and is followed by various versions of Jelly Bean, including 4.1.x with 19.2%, 4.2.x with 20.3% and 4.3 with 6.5%.

The outdated Ice Cream Sandwich (4.03-04) is still present in the chats with 7.8%, while Froyo 2.0 also grabs 0.4%.

As you mentioned above, many users have been reluctant to installing Lollipop on their devices because the update is known to bring about a whole host of problems. Some have been fixed so far, others are still under scrutiny.

However, in the first few months we are going to see to see a lot of device makers including Samsung, HTC, Sony and Motorola roll out the Lollipop update for their respective handsets, so Android 5.0 will become more widespread.

Have you updated or are you willing to update when the time comes?
