14 DAY TRIAL // Soon, owners of HTC One smartphones on the network of wireless carrier Sprint will be able to download and install the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system on their devices, the company has officially confirmed.
In fact, Sprint and HTC actually made the update available for some people out there, on a user initiated request basis, but have decided to put the rollout on hold for the time being.
Pushed out as version 4.06.651.4, the software included the Android 4.4 KitKat and the Sense 5.5 user interface. However, soon after the initial availability, the carrier announced that it decided to pull the plug on that update.
“This software update is on hold and should be pushed to production very soon. Apologize for the inconvenience,” the wireless carrier announced in a post on its support website.
Said message also unveiled that, while the release was available only for customer-initiated requests, the network-initiated rollout was set to kick off in batches on February 11, which suggests that this could be the actual availability date for the update.
On his Twitter account, Mohammed Versi, executive director, product management, HTC, has also confirmed that the OS upgrade will be released very soon for the Sprint HTC One, and that it will be the very first carrier-branded model in the US to receive it.
“HTC One Owners - Happy to share that Sprint is the 1st US carrier to launch Android 4.4 on HTC One! Update available soon,” he said. He has also mentioned that the OTA update will be available before February 11.
While there’s no telling when exactly the update will start arriving, it seems that it might not be too long before HTC and Sprint actually start rolling it out, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can always head to Settings > About Phone > Software update to see if it hasn’t arrived already.
