Sony Mobile Canada has just announced that the long-awaited Android 4.4 KitKat update is now available for Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra smartphones.

According to the Japanese company, owners of Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra who purchased their smartphones through Bell, Rogers and TELUS should check their devices for the update.

Keep in mind that you will be able to download the Android 4.4 KitKat either OTA (over the air) or through Sony PC Companion desktop software.

Besides the usual new features and improvements added by Google’s Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, the update also includes some goodies specifically developed by Sony’s engineers.

For example, there are new animations and livewallpapers across the lock and home screens, as well as Sony’s tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings, which is said to be more intuitive and customizable.

Most of the Sony applications included in Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra will receive updates through Android 4.4 KitKat, so expect new features and improvements to be included in those as well.

Last but not least, the Xperia Themes with downloadable packs from Sony Select will be included as well. Have you captured the KitKat update already? Share your feedback with us in the comments.
