After rolling out the Android 4.3 update for its Xperia Tablet Z in December 2013, Sony is currently offering the next best thing, in the form of the Android 4.4. KitKat update.

Back in March, we told you the Android 4.4 update was scheduled to arrive in May, but as TabletsMagazine reports, it appears Sony has taken the opportunity to roll out the update a few weeks prior. That’s great news for all Xperia Tablet Z owners, who will soon be able to upgrade to the latest OS standard.

The tablet was launched as Sony's flagship device a year ago at MWC 2014 and comes sporting a pretty impressive pack of specifications.

Also, Sony regularly makes updates available for its devices. As opposed to LG, that skipped the Android 4.3 phase with its G Pad 8.3 tablet and directly targeted the chocolaty goodness of KitKat, Sony offered the Android 4.3 update a few months ago.

The new build won’t come only bundling Google’s own set of Android 4.4 KitKat features, but Sony will be adding some changes too.

We don’t have the official change log yet, so we can’t tell you what they will be exactly, but looking at the Xperia S Ultra which was recently updated, enhancements will probably include modified toggles for quick settings, deeper integration with cloud services offered by Sony and support for Xperia themes.

Back at MWC 2014 in February, Sony rolled out the successor of the Xperia Tablet Z, in the form of the flagship Xperia Z2 Tablet, which comes with Android 4.4.2 out of the box.

So now users of the year-old tablet will be able to go head-to-head with owners of the new slate, in terms of OS.

Compared to its successor, the Xperia Tablet Z is a little bulkier and has its audio speakers placed on the bottom corners of the device.

In the screen department, the two tablets offer the same standard, so the Xperia Tablet Z comes with a 10.1-inch display with a capable 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and 224 ppi.

Because the tablet represents the previous generation, it draws power from a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon, while the newer model has the latest 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 tablet processor under the hood.

However, both of them are said to be able to provide up to 10 hours of juice, on a single charge.

Anyway, check your Xperia Tablet Z to see if the OTA update has arrived on your tablet and let us know if it has.
