Starting today, owners of Moto X devices on the network of wireless carrier Sprint can download and install the Android 4.4 KitKat update on their smartphones.

The new OS flavor was announced for this smartphone several days ago, when Sprint and Motorola also kicked off the testing phase for it, and is now up for grabs for all those who purchased the smartphone.

Sprint has already posted a note on its support website informing users on the availability of the new release, while also detailing the main enhancements that it brings along.

Furthermore, it seems that some users have already received notifications on their Moto X device on the availability of the upgrade, which clearly shows that the rollout has started.

The update will be pushed out in stages, which means that it will take a few days before all users receive it. It will be rolled out over-the-air as version 13.11.3Q2.X-69-3-8, Sprint announced.

“KitKat includes enhancements such as restyled status and navigation bars, a new full-screen mode, color emoji support, improved closed captioning support, stronger security, smarter power use, and more tools and capabilities for better app development,” the carrier notes.

Following the update, users will also enjoy an improved Phone Dialer app, which enables them to look up contacts straight from the dial pad, see and tap frequent contacts, and search corporate directory.

Furthermore, the update packs a new version of Google Hangouts, with support for integrated SMS/MMS messaging, allowing users to set Hangouts as the default SMS app from the Settings menu.

There is also NFC Host Card Emulation support, with was meant to offer better experiences to users, including contactless payments, loyalty plans, transit passes, card access and more.

Moreover, Android 4.4 comes with Camera - Focus and exposure improvements: “Enhanced the ‘touch to focus’ option with a new circular, on screen control that can be dragged by your finger around the viewfinder to adjust a photo's focus and exposure,” Sprint explains.

The Gallery – Photo editing capabilities of the device were also updated: “Added new photo editing options to the Gallery app including new filter effects, draw on your photos, advanced cropping, and adjustments to color, exposure, contrast and more.”

At the same time, the update brings Touchless Control enhancements, such as "Find my phone," accessible by saying "OK, Google Now-find my phone."
