Yesterday, a new firmware update for the Xperia T2 Ultra has received the necessary certification, and the software is already rolling out to devices out there, providing users with a taste of the long-awaited Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

Sony Mobile has officially announced the availability of this update, while also revealing some of the new features and enhancements that it will provide users with.

According to the company, in addition to the performance improvements and user interface optimizations that Android 4.4 KitKat arrives on devices with, the new firmware update also comes with a series of enhancements delivered by Sony itself.

The mobile phone maker has revealed that the new update will provide users with tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings, so as to provide them with a more intuitive and customizable experience. Moreover, both of these areas have been cleaned up, so that users receive only the notifications they really need.

The user interface that users will enjoy with the new platform upgrade will pretty much resemble the one available on Sony PlayStation 4, including a sleek launch animation and live wallpaper across the lock and home screens.

At the same time, the company announced that its entire native app portfolio has been updated to the latest versions as part of the new platform upgrade for T2 Ultra.

Thus, users will enjoy an improved experience when it comes to software such as Messaging, MyXperia, Smart Connect, Small apps, TrackID, TrackID TV, Sony Select, and Smart Social Camera.

On top of that, new iterations of Sony’s Media apps, including WALKMAN, Album, and Movies, are available for download, all of them with Sony Entertainment Network cloud service integration, thus offering a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience.

Users will also enjoy Sony Entertainment Network and PlayMemories integration with a more intuitive UI, as well as with improved download speeds, and other enhancements as well.

Moreover, the update will also provide users with the possibility to enjoy the already popular, custom interface experience called “Xperia Themes,”, which has reached over 2 million downloads so far.

It comes with downloadable UI packs from Sony Select, enabling owners of Xperia smartphones out there to skin up to 280 assets across their smartphones with a variety of styles.

The latest platform upgrade for Xperia T2 Ultra will add compatibility with the SmartWear Experience, which includes the SmartBand SWR10 and Lifelog app, so that users can easily record social, physical and entertainment activities.

While the update has already started to arrive on devices out there, the rollout will be performed in stages, which means that some users might have to wait for several days or longer for it to arrive.

The Android 4.4 KitKat OS upgrade will soon be released to all Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 (& M2 dual variants, respectively) devices out there, the mobile phone maker has revealed.
