Even though Google has confirmed that it has developed the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system to work on most smartphones and tablets, including those featuring low specs, the older handsets will never receive an official update.

Luckily, the community of Android developers and enthusiasts is already working to deliver custom ROMs that comprise the latest features included in the newest Android versions available on the market.

Some of the older or budget-friendly Sony smartphones have already received an Android 4.4 KitKat unofficial build, as well as the Google Nexus One, which has been confirmed not to receive the upgrade.

Today, Samsung fans will be happy to know that some of the low-end handsets launched by the South Korean company, which will probably never get an official Android 4.4 KitKat update, are now eligible for unofficial builds.

Owners of Samsung Galaxy Ace, Galaxy Fit, Galaxy Mini and Galaxy Gio devices can now flash an unofficial Android 4.4 KitKat build onto their smartphones.

Make sure you follow the instructions recommended by the developers before getting this custom build on your device though, as you can brick your smartphone with ease.

Speaking of which, AndroidAmV6 group of developers, “most notably XDA Recognized Developers psyke83 and erikcas, XDA Recognized Contributor yajnab” brought these KitKat builds to these popular Samsung smartphones, XDA Developers reports.

However, keep in mind that these unofficial Android 4.4 KitKat builds are still a work in progress and some issues are present.

The alpha versions of the ROMs are not yet meant to be used on a daily basis unless you don’t mind the fact that some of the features, such as the camera, do not work.
