The LG Optimus G Pro is a one-year-old smartphone and back in 2013, when it was released on the market, it was powered by the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box.

Soon after Google announced Android 4.4 KitKat, LG Mobile confirmed that the G Pro would receive an upgrade to the latest version sometime in Q2.

Although LG is well known for delaying its updates indefinitely, it looks like this time, they were able to deliver the Android 4.4.2 KitKat upgrade on time.

The first LG Optimus G Pro owners who will be able to enjoy the advantages of the Android 4.4.2 KitKat new features are those who have purchased their phones through AT&T’s official retail channels.

The major carrier has already confirmed that LG Optimus G Pro will receive the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update beginning May 21. However, given the fact that this is a staged rollout, it will take some time until it reaches all devices.

According to AT&T, the update is pushed OTA (over the air) and is only compatible with LG Optimus G Pro model E980, which is only available at AT&T.

The carrier has also announced that the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update will be made available to its customers to download via firmware over the air (FOTA) over AT&T's wireless network.

Although the update file size is 700-800MB, AT&T has confirmed that it will not count against your data usage, but we recommend users to download it via Wi-Fi to make it faster.

It is also recommended to back up all media files and sensitive data to an SD card or a PC, prior to upgrading the software, in order to avoid them being deleted during the update, although LG claims that the upgrade should have no impact to settings or data.

Aside from updating the phone’s software to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the update also brings some new features and improvements. For example, AT&T mentions that after the update, users will notice the revamped status and navigation bars.

There’s also a new full-screen mode and Google Cloud Printer support. Some security enhancements have been included as well, together with battery performance improvements.

LG Optimus G Pro is equipped with a 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor and the Android 4.4.2 KitKat is said to enhance its processing speed.

In order to manually check for the update, simply head over to Settings / About phone / Software update / Updated now. In case it’s not available yet, you may want to check for it later.
